Which Matters More - Money & Special Interests or Principles?

In the New York Times Tuesday, Dec 9th edition is a front page story headlined “GOP Donors Seek Early Call on ’16 Nominee.” A select elite group of donors and bundlers (fundraisers who collect money from multiple sources and hand it in a bundle to a candidate) have been meeting and discussing how to pre-select candidates for President in 2016. Their argument is that the primary process is inefficient and the candidates they support are not guaranteed to be elected. One billionaire went so far as to say, “This isn’t a good return on my investment,” as if it was all about money.
The three candidates under consideration, according to the article, are Governor Chris Christie of NJ, former governor Jeb Bush of Florida, and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney. When asked why they were discussing these three gentlemen, the response was that they have the largest overlapping donor base among their friends. Nowhere in the article is it mentioned that principles were important, that programs that benefitted the entire public were important, or that the Constitution and all that it stands for was important.  The main criteria appeared to be which candidate can beat Hillary Rodham Clinton. It is worthy and meritable to seek a credible candidate, but part of that credibility should be based upon what they believe, what they will do, and what collective solutions they will seek to implement.

In the same newspaper was an interview with the directors of MoveOn.org, a liberal counterpart to billionaires’ Super PACs. They are starting a draft movement to encourage Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts to enter the race for President in 2016. They too will be bundling money and will begin to air TV ads in Iowa and New Hampshire early in 2015.

The reason we started the Nuttle Report and the independent movement, the New Horizon Council, was to get away from supporting candidates strictly on party identity or for the benefit of one single special interest group. Most Americans are not identified with single issue groups. And of the 82% of the American public that says the country is on the wrong track, most do not say that the influence of narrow special interests is the solution. It is the intent and purpose of the New Horizon Council to establish a new dialog in the United States about principles that bind us as opposed to policy that divides us. It’s not just a matter of stating a principle to justify a special interest. It is tantamount that a principle that unites be cited that results in support of a special interest. From uniting principles, the debate should be about priorities. Government policy should be designed to implement priorities that are resultant from principles that unite us and bind us together.

Now, unless the electorate will enter into a conversation about uniting principles that establish a platform for candidates to stand on, then the special interests will rule the day. The Nuttle Report’s purpose is to stimulate conversation in America with its citizens about principles that are fundamental to who we are as a people and a culture and, therefore, bind and unite us. This conclusion is based upon the uniting principle of the Constitution and due process for all citizens wherein all citizens are treated equally and have equal access to government.

For more information on these principles, and to participate in the conversation, the website that sets out the elements is found at www.NewHorizonCouncil.com. I am asking you to determine what you believe, and state what you believe that is critical for the future of the United States of America. And I am asking you not to give up this country’s election process to the special interests. No matter how well-meaning, they are making their decisions and applying their influence for conveniency and narrow policy. For our children’s future, let’s do the righteous thing, which means the right thing and pass on to the next generation what the Founding Fathers established - liberty by the rule of the people.
