This was known in literature as “an existence that was Camelot.”
Throughout history, such an existence has been referenced and memorialized in speech, art, poetry, even objectives. Yet, it has not only been elusive, it has never been experienced by society.
Why?
Are we incapable as humans of such mutual respect and common cause? Are we too inherently selfish to seek another’s happiness as primary over our own? Normal analysis and approach to achieving Camelot has failed miserably in history. Present events would indicate the same consistent outcome. Perhaps the question requires a different perspective.
The United States government is currently consumed with the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump. The national media has reacted with their signature frenzied feeding. Government has become dysfunctional. The people go about their business as they must to feed their families.
While Washington pontificates inside its bubble, the rest of the world watches in anticipation, given pause about the verdict’s impact on their individual lives. Also, nations abroad in competition with the U.S. take advantage of the “time out” to advance their own geopolitical purposes.
We as Americans are, at times, isolated from the feelings of people in other nations. We have little knowledge of how important we are to the world’s stability. Rome at its fall became numb to the needs of the provinces. The final invasion by the Visigoths was the result of Rome neglecting the request from the empire for leadership.
I write this report from Santa Cruz, Bolivia. I’m here advising leaders on economic reform. Last fall, Bolivia’s President Evo Morales abdicated government, resigned, and fled the country. This exodus was mandated by the people after a 21-day strike that virtually shut down the country. Martial Law was imposed. No food was allowed into the largest city of Santa Cruz. The people survived by helping each other. This was not a labor strike or a business strike or a progressives’ strike. This was a people’s strike.
Bolivia is now conducting a special election to find Morales’ replacement. It is refreshing to observe the civil interaction between divisions of Bolivian society. The media is supportive of the average citizen. No partisan agenda is disguised as intellectual debate.
My counterpart for economic advice to Bolivia is China. Their representatives offer help with infrastructure and communications (5G networks). They will finance development, but at a very deceptive, high price. China pays for construction in Yuans. The government of Bolivia must repay China in US dollars at an above-average interest rate. For this, China gains access to Bolivia’s raw resources. Bolivia is required to open accounts in Chinese banks. While the U.S. is distracted, China moves its agenda aggressively.
Many governments who could potentially support the U.S. position in the world are themselves facing critical problems. The United Kingdom, Israel, Ukraine, El Salvador, and Taiwan all find themselves in a unique vice of pressure.
Rather than make sense of our constitutional crisis, the media continues to ignore the genuine feelings of over 40% of the American public. During the recent March for Life in Washington, DC, the national press boycotted the event. They failed to recognize and report that a record number of young people joined the march. They depicted President Trump’s appearance at the march as a political ploy. It is not their mission to report only their opinions. What about the hopes of all those young Americans?
As far as the impeachment trial, little effort has been expended by the mainstream media to find out how a draft of former National Security Advisor John Bolton’s book was illegally leaked by a government source, or so it would appear. None of this behavior brings peace or confidence to the general public.
Maybe we should look at Camelot differently. It is not a physical place. It is a spiritual place which represents a physical domain. The reality of a Camelot is a society wherein there exists:
- A nation with a purpose of common culture
- Government leaders with an eternal moral compass
- Business leaders with a commitment to social ethics
- Teachers with an open, non-prejudicial mind
- Media spokesmen driven by truth, not their own opinion
- Entertainment artists with a respect for traditional values
- Religious leaders with a servant’s heart
- Constituents with a follower’s attitude for cooperation and obedience
- Families committed to each other, unconditionally, through the generations
The fact is, Camelot exists inside of us and through each of us to one another. What is required to realize Camelot is a commitment from all of us to the integrity of citizen relationships.
Seem like a legendary fantasy in search of Camelot?
Perhaps the people of the United States should take a lesson from the people of Bolivia.
