Volume 6, Issue 17
The first axiom is that there is no static condition of equilibrium that can be maintained between establishment government and the society it rules. Unlike in nature, this equilibrium is constantly changing. The second axiom is that, to maintain authority, government will always tighten its control rather than respect and accept the will of the people or their demand for change. Axiom number three is that the establishment, and those competing forces which intend to loosen its control, will always see themselves as the moral authority to define and produce equilibrium in the new relationship.
This results in divisions of society defined by identity politics.
The epic confrontation of the powers at hand to perpetuate business as usual tightens the chains as society resists.
Great change, for good or bad, brought on through reformation, follows a template of cause and effect, resulting in eruptive action. The cycles are authority established, individual freedom pressured, establishment resistance, hope lost, resistance eruption, transition, and new authority established.
Each cycle is a course within itself. Term, intensity, and direction of each said cycle is based upon the values of the society living through it. Transformation to a new order reflects the principles of the society’s expectations for the generations. Eternal truths, properly protected, lead to transformation to a stable, righteous authority. Anything less in this commitment leads to a repeat of the cycles.

The New Normal
A new societal normal has set in with the Trump Administration. French President Emmanuel Macron conducted a joint press conference with President Trump at the White House today. In the question and answer session, the French President had marginal disagreement with our President in reference to future dealings with Iran. They left the podiums arm-in-arm. Tonight, President Trump will host President Macron in the first formal State Dinner of Trump’s presidency. They will toast each other, agree to disagree, and agree to continue working together.
Further, President Trump announced today his intentions to meet with North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. World leaders and the national press have moved from outrage to cautious optimism. In other words, the intelligentsia is now dealing with Donald Trump rather than simply reacting to him. It is a major shift in the art of polity.
The Robert Mueller independent counsel investigation drags on without any empirical evidence that actual collusion existed between any U.S. citizens and the Russians to influence the American elections of 2016. There is evidence of Russian interference, but not collusion. Independent Counsel Mueller may find extra-curricular illegal activity resulting in further individual indictments. Like the Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr who was appointed to further investigate Whitewater, that investigation went on for several months leading to indictments unrelated to Whitewater.
The Cycle of Lost Hope
The forces of societal physics that will not allow static equilibrium will always move the process through the seven cycles listed above. What is not certain is what will become the manifested new order of authority established.
In 1512 following hope lost, ‘resistance eruption’ began with Martin Luther nailing his thesis to the establishment church door. In 1776, it began with the American colonies declaring independence from the British Crown. In 1789, it began with the French Revolution. In 1917, it began with the Russian Bolshevik Revolt. And in 2016, it began with the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. When the chains are tightened to the point the oppressed are suffocating, desperation for hope seeds rebellion. The chains are loosened. Those in power tighten their grip. The chains are then broken.
Freedom is instinctively sought by the people. However, this is not always the resolution when commitment to principle is ignored.
The Reformation did lead to religious freedom, but not without religious wars. The French Revolution led to relief from a king detached from reality. Yet democratic socialism replaced the totalitarian monarchy. The Bolshevik Revolution led to communism. Only the American Revolutionary War of the United States led to a true new order of freedom. What, in fact, will be the societal transition of the election of Donald Trump is yet to be determined.
The Trust of the Generations
The Baby Boomers, born from 1945 to 1962, inherited a new world order in the aftermath of World War II. Whatever the condition of the world today in general, and the United States in particular, materialized on their watch. Ongoing deficits, increasing debt, divisions in society, and government priorities, are but a few of the trends deemed to be intractable. Regardless of the debate or analysis of the causes of these trends, they are not the fault of post-Baby Boomer generations.
A dangerous sentiment can be detected among the Baby Boomer generation that, in the cycle of lost hope, they have given up. Many feel there is nothing they can do about the “new normal.” And worse, they lament that they will be dead and gone before the trends of destruction are fully realized.
Millennials, to some extent, feel victimized by the current state of affairs passed to them from the Baby Boomer generation. They inherently resent that, in the United States, they are a generation that did not receive greater opportunity from the previous generations. They are suspect of any demands for discipline from the generation that was not able to course-correct our nation’s priorities to maintain equilibrium between government and society.
Millennials do not universally trust Baby Boomers.
The Greatest Generation faced the eternal threats to our country with incredible courage and commitment. What would have happened if they had taken the tone of attitude and position that the war in Europe was not their fault, not their problem, and would not affect them before they died?
The world’s language to day might have been German.
The cycles of societal development are the only constants of a non-static governing equilibrium. The forces of these cycles will result in Breaking the Chains of Business as Usual. Resistance and transition to a new authority are certain. Whether that transition results in new freedoms of eternal principles, or in false hope in government-dictated standards, is the consequence of a society’s commitment. A commitment to eternal principles, honored by the generation in authority, is required to defend individual freedom and purpose.
Winston Churchill’s quote in the darkest hours of World War II are as appropriate now to America as it was to the British people then:
“Never give in – never, never, never, never in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense…”
The transition to new authority is happening before our very eyes. Vigilance is imperative to guide it to a destination of liberty.
