Volume 7, Issue 21
Last weekend, the European Union held elections to the EU Parliament that meets in Brussels. The election process is a complicated formula wherein nation-state members elect proportional representation. The results were clear in one consideration. The general electorate rejected the Establishment. The historically dominating parties of the center right and center left lost seats. The nationalist parties of the right and the environmentalist parties of the left gained seats in what appears to be equal gains. The result will further divide Europe in political acrimony.
History again repeats itself.
In seeking opportunity, progressives claim government programs and directives are the answer, not only for egalitarianism but economic opportunity. Moral principles of citizen responsibility are silently ignored as if irrelevant. Further, the human need for diversity and unrestricted pursuit of opportunity are denied as a meritable objective of Elysium.
In the penumbra, government advocates look for justification of purpose that is not found germane in reality. They seek solutions that exist only in theory.
Socialism and communism have been tried and found wanting. The far right and the far left, in and of themselves, are not the answer. Left to their own means, they too become extreme, doubling down on their non-inclusive tenets. When the center of the political universe ceases to generate a core balance of equilibrium, untethered to a center of gravity, outer planets spin out of control.
Opportunity is lost when the lessons of history are not respected. Society is then subject to the same results, repercussions, and tragedies of past failures.
Throughout history, religion has played a role in defining the moral attributes of human nature in a properly aligned relationship with God. Oddly enough, neither penumbra law nor the ruling parties of the EU find any hidden rights for religious liberty.
Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a recent commencement speech to the graduates of Tulane University, said, “In some important ways, my generation has failed you.” By this he meant more government is required to provide opportunity. Really?! Mr. Cook did not found or provide the initial vision for Apple. The visionary of Apple was Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs’ advice in a speech to new graduates said that, “regulations and unnecessary costs” stifle America’s economy and education system. Mr. Jobs believed in free enterprise and unrestricted pursuit of happiness as an individual choice and right.
I leave today for Kiev, Ukraine to meet with the newly elected President Volodymyr Zelensky. He’s a former comedian with no official government experience. He defeated the traditional incumbent by over 48%. This is an astounding result rendered by a population that has known socialism, collectivism, and communism first-hand. They have experienced the lessons of history and have said there must be a better way. Individual freedom and liberty should be paramount in the goals and objectives of any governing body. These principles are not hidden in the shadows, but stand out as beacons of light. Those who believe in total government control must find hidden secrets for authority because, for that which is obvious leaves them in the dust bins of historical precedent. In the shadows, the principles of dignity are the same.
It is my hope that America can help the people of Ukraine and their new president pursue a new path of peace and prosperity, finding opportunity in the penumbra to be the same proven truth.
