Volume 6, Issue 31
Guatemala is a case study in the commitment to moral values. Drugs and drug lords have not overrun their country. In this region of the world, this does not happen by accident. Such government success only happens when the people stand courageously against violence, corruption, and criminal activity.
It has been disappointing to find that the U.S. State Department policy, established under President Barack Obama, was to pressure the Guatemalan government into accepting a progressive agenda. Instead of providing economic support and protecting free trade, State Department officials were demanding that a social agenda be implemented which was not in concert with a Catholic Christian society. President Trump is taking steps to correct this egregious policy.
What is critical today between state relations of America and Guatemala in a global economic matrix is that the United States government support free trade, rule of law, and direct economic treaty negotiation to advance industries that are beneficial to job creation in both countries. It is both appropriate and necessary for the U.S. State Department to coordinate economic policy. However, family values, education, and parental rights are none of the State Department’s business. These family issues are under the absolute authority of the local citizenry. How dare the State Department intervene in the determination of a family’s rights in how their children should be educated or their morals established. Such actions constitute cultural colonialism.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, European sovereign powers colonized developing countries. These sovereigns sought to influence societies for the advancement of their own economic mercantilism. Primarily, then, the purpose of colonialism was to extract economic gain and benefit. President James Monroe issued a proclamation in 1820 declaring colonization in the west was ended. It became known as the Monroe Doctrine.
Colonialism is now rearing its ugly head in different manifestations.
As stated in last week’s Nuttle Report, China is providing nation-state models for developing African nations. This is in an effort to train them to become part of the Chinese economic system. The Chinese entice countries to follow their government format in exchange for infrastructure investment. The Chinese then obtain rights for the development of raw resources and future trade. Countries that accept this temptation will discover why President Monroe took a stand against colonialism.
There is a price to be paid for allowing a government other than your own to control your children’s economic future.
Guatemala is requesting the United States to honor the same liberty, on which America was founded, for its trading partners.
There are elements of society, such as social justice, that require cooperation and support of trading partners. Immigration, human rights, drug wars, fighting organized crime, and basic rule of law require cooperation. Family values define a culture. Culture is a responsibility maintained for moral purpose to benefit the generations. Religious liberty and basic individual freedom are tenets of ultimate eternal principles to be defined and protected as each sovereign nation’s people so determine.
Guatemala looks to the United States for partnership. They stand with America in fighting drug lords and criminal activity. As a nation, they are committed to free enterprise. Expanding trade with them should be a U.S. priority. Respecting the determination of family values as the sovereign authority of the Guatemalan people should be our national commitment.
If America is to lead the world in self-determination and independence, it is paramount in our intentions and actions that we respect and defend the same liberty for the sovereigns with whom we trade and the coalition of nations which we lead.
My name is Marc Nuttle and this is what I believe.
