The President has gone too far in his rhetoric.
These women Members of Congress are all U.S. citizens, duly elected by their constituencies. Three are natural born citizens and one is an immigrant who is a naturalized citizen. America is their home. Debating their legitimacy is a distraction from the merits of the critical issues at hand.
The women who call themselves “The Squad,” on the other hand, have been given great political leniency by the national press. They have made incredible comments about policies each wishes to invoke. They are avowed socialists. This term has taken on different meaning, depending upon the understanding of economics by those who use the term. In the Squad’s case, they want government control of all private sector revenue. They wish to decide what, if anything, is appropriate for a citizen to keep for themselves. This is known as democratic socialism. Private ownership is recognized, but revenue is directed by the state. France is largely a democratic socialistic state. You may own an asset, but you are basically a manager of the asset for government purposes. This can include employee’s salaries, paid vacation, parental leave, unemployment, and health care. In this economic system, a person works to manage the business and meet the state’s mandates for benefits. This is not technically communism and the Squad has not claimed they are communists.
Further, though, the Squad has tagged the President with numerous negative and derogatory labels. They were calling him racist long before the latest Twitter firestorm. They have advocated impeachment. Yesterday, in a news conference called by the Squad, they fed off the progressives’ energy to denounce the personality of the President. The Squad ended their news conference with a new call for impeachment. They apparently came to the conclusion that a direct denouncement of them qualified as “high crimes and misdemeanors”.
The Squad has gone too far in their rhetoric.
The national press and talking heads continue to ignore the substantive analysis of proposed policies either by the President or the progressives. There are consequences to new policies. What are they? How will they impact the next generation? How does the average American come to the conclusion on what’s best for his or her family?
The national press continues to be a disappointment.
It’s as if politics today has become children in a schoolyard, fighting over position in the sand box, calling each other hateful names meant to somehow strengthen their position on the playground by rendering the most hurtful, negative personal attack. In this metaphor, the consequence only impacts the kids on the playground. When the teacher has had enough, the kids are called in, disciplined for their lack of respect and decorum, lectured on personal responsibility to each other, and restricted for recess privileges as a penalty. Only the disorderly minors pay the price for their indiscretions.
We the citizens are now the authority over the playground.
The difference between playground transgressions and the dispute between the President and the Squad is that on the playground the child’s position in the sandbox only affects them. The policy proposals of the President and members of Congress do matter. The results of their ideas implemented have consequences impacting each of us as citizens.
The point is to understand what works in reality and what is possibility only in theory.
A recent survey of the population of Guatemala indicated that one-third of the population is planning to immigrate to the United States. That’s over 2 million people. Another study conducted for Congress also indicates that, on a worldwide basis, 158 million people are currently planning to immigrate to the United States. We can’t take them all. We have to design a humane process to manage a world geo-political geo-economic crisis.
Why is the U.S. the number one country of choice for immigration? Why does everyone want to come here first rather than any other country in the world? There are many reasons. Freedom and Liberty are the most desired. It is not because immigrants think that the Squad will be successful in enacting democratic socialism.
In the latest NBS/Wall Street Journal Poll President Trump trails the top democratic candidates. But, however, when asked are you definitely or likely to vote for President Trump, 50% say yes. What is the difference in the numbers? The answer is that 14% are ticket splitters. They dislike President Trump’s personality. But, they like his policies. They are weighing his conflict of emotions. It is these ticket splitters that will decide the election. They will make their decision based on the perceived consequences of each candidate’s proposals. They will not make their choice based on the most negative name-caller.
Measuring personality versus policy is key to the decision making process.
Grasping the point of consequence for any far-reaching political agenda of governance is critical to a citizen’s responsibility.
Democracy is a gift to the human race. Our children trust us o be good stewards of the liberty that a government by the people affords.
Such duty is sacred.
