Volume 10, Issue 13
Such offensive brutality is evil incarnate. There can be no degrees of right or wrong in judgment. There can be no measure of tolerance in the condemnation of these acts.
Today, even in light of the uncontradicted proof of indiscriminate use of force against innocent women and children, certain nations still support Russia or are benign in criticism. A majority of these countries are driven by economic considerations.
Most nations of the free world, taking their lessons from the atrocities of Nazism in World War II, condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They recognized the need to hold Vladimir Putin accountable for war crimes.
Nations will be held accountable by history for the decisions they make in declaring their allegiances in this world identity divide.
Every citizen of every sovereign nation in the world must also make known by declaration the principles of brotherly love to which they adhere for relationship with fellow members of the human race. In 1933 Germany as Adolph Hitler was coming to power, accompanied and fueled by venomous hatred towards targeted segments of society, many German citizens refused to condemn his poisonous rhetoric. Denial of adjuration on behalf of the Jewish population was based in the common fear that oneself would be persecuted.
Putting oneself on record condemning racism and bigotry during the rise of Nazism in 1930s Germany was a risk. However, the greater evil it represented consumed the nation, and ultimately led to 72 million deaths worldwide as a result of World War II.
Evil must be confronted wherever it emerges in its initial stages before it reaches critical mass. Attempting to defeat it once it reaches the point of a formidable force can be too late.
There is no diary, no statement, no testimony of anyone living in Germany at the time just prior to World War II who later claimed that their passivity, toward what they knew was unholy unrighteousness, was justified.
The map above illustrates how divided the world is on what is really totalitarianism versus democracy. If China and Russia are intent upon establishing a new economic iron curtain, the reach of this economic divide would be greater than the former Soviet Union. Yet the populations and resources involved are not in their favor. The red nations above represent approximately one-third of the world population. India and Brazil, who have to date remained neutral, are heavily in debt denominated in U.S. dollars. It would be very difficult for them to transition into a command world economy. The blue nations produce roughly three-fourths of the world’s GDP. As long as the United States remains true to the tenets of free enterprise, China, as the leader of totalitarian economies, will be unsuccessful in ultimately controlling or expanding their reach.
What is necessary now, without reservation, is for the United States to lead the free world in the defense of free enterprise and freedom.
Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939. No one declared war against Germany. There was condemnation. A few sanctions were imposed. But Hitler was not held accountable immediately at the German border. Most leaders in Europe were weary of war and the devastation wreaked from World War I. They hoped in vain that Hitler would be satisfied with his initial aggression.
Germany had executed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Russia. Russia joined Germany in its invasion of Poland in September of 1939. Two days later, France and Great Britain declared war against Germany.
Two men, Winston Churchill and Adolph Hitler, singularly by their early decisions, had a major impact on the outcome of World War II. Churchill was urged by his own political party to sue for peace with Germany. Had he agreed to do so, Great Britain would have become red on the map above. The United States would have been without a location to marshal forces for the D-Day landing.
Hitler swept through Belgium and then France. He made the decision not to invade England at a critical point following Dunkirk when English shores were at their most vulnerable. He instead turned his blitzkrieg east later attacking Russia in a surprise attack, violating their pact. Russia then declared war on Germany June 22, 1941, joining the allied forces. Had Hitler honored the non-aggression pact with Russia, Russia might never have entered the war against Germany.
Early in the war the one voice, the one group that had the courage and conviction to demand that their leaders defend freedom, the character of their nation, and their national cultural identity, was the people of Great Britain.
One man heeded their call. One voice and one man were all that were required.
The United States entered the war on the side of the allied forces following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The people of the United States, without question or reservation, committed their resources, their services, and their lives to the cause of defending freedom.
Whatever happens next in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the atrocities committed cannot be ignored or accepted. The criminals must be prosecuted. China must be made to understand that support of Russian military policy will not only make them complicit in Russia’s aggression, but full partners in a new economic axis that must be defeated.
Prior to World War II, European powers were the center of leverage for decisions leading up to resolution or conflict of war. Today, the United States and China hold that leverage.
May there be no tolerance for evil. May the voices of individual freedom rise again. May our leaders once again hear the call.
